Preparing for Earth Day
Earth Day 2021 is on April 22nd
In his 2015 Encyclical, Laudato Si’, Pope Francis said, “….The pace of consumption, waste and environmental change has so stretched the planet’s capacity that our contemporary lifestyle, unsustainable as it is, can only precipitate catastrophes, such as those which even now periodically occur in different areas of the world. The effects of the present imbalance can only be reduced by our decisive action, here and now…” (#161)
The Paris accord is working to keep carbon and methane emissions from raising earth temperatures by more than 1.5-2 degrees Celsius. That goal likely requires major emitting nations including China, the U.S., Europe, Japan, India, and others, to reduce emissions by 50% over the next decade. This is a challenging task. Humanity has been worthy of accomplishing many challenges in the past, however, overcoming famines, pandemics, and other hardships.
Earth Day, April 22, 2021, symbolizes a time for all of us to come together and address issues of protecting our planet, our way of life, and equality for all. Events for the day and the month can be found by searching online for Eventbrite/Earth Day: Fairfax, VA earth day festival Events | Eventbrite.
Some Earth Day events include the Virtual Run Challenge, which sets out symbolic goals such as a group running goal to see how many times we can virtually circle the earth’s 24,901 mile equator: 2020 Earth Day Virtual Challenge | The Virtual Run Challenge; Plant a Seed in Celebration of Earth Day; the Alexandria River Cleanup; Folk for the Future (an outdoor benefit concert); Restore Our Earth and other events. To get involved in local planning, you can visit our Fairfax County government site that’s facilitating a local community wide energy and climate change program (CECAP): Public Engagement with CECAP | Office of Environmental and Energy Coordination (fairfaxcounty.gov). Decisive action can start now, with fun as well as challenging activities for all ages.
