Catholic Social Teaching

What does the Catholic Church teach is our duty as practicing Catholics? The following points give a brief summary below.

Life and Dignity of the Human Person

Human life is sacred.
People are more important than things.

Call to Family, Community, and Participation

Family is the central social institution.
We have a right and duty to participate in society.

Right and Responsibilities

Sound communities can be achieved only if human rights are protected and responsibilities are met.

Option for the Poor and Vulnerable

Put the needs of the poor and vulnerable first.

The Dignity of Work and the Rights of Workers

The economy must serve people not the other way around.
Work is a form of continuing participation in God’s creation.
Respect the right to productive work and decent and fair wages.

Solidarity

Loving your neighbor has global dimensions and extends to all people regardless of nationality, race, ethnicity, socio-economic or ideological differences.

Care for God’s Creation

We are called to protect people and the planet.
Live your faith in relationship with all of God’s creation.
