Fair Trade is Caring for Our Common Home

We learned from the teachings of Laudato Si’ that everything is connected, that caring for creation means caring for the earth and all who inhabit the earth, human and non-human.  We can participate in sustainable development among disadvantaged people by purchasing the goods they send to market via Fair Trade businesses.
The Care for Creation Committee is excited about hosting our first Parish Fair Trade Sale after Masses the first weekend in December.
Our market will feature Fair Trade Winds, who also have brick and mortar stores; read the fascinating story behind Fair Trade Winds at www.fairtradewinds.net .  While new to the St. Luke campus, Fair Trade has been promoting success among small farmers and artisans for many years.
Demonstrating the history and proven business value of Fair Trade, both 10,000 Villages and SERRV have been successfully linking small artisans to global markets and sustainable income since the 1940s.  Fair Trade continues to be innovative and essential to the prosperity of socially and economically marginalized people, allowing them to live and work independently and use their skills to support their families and communities without migrating.
Fair Trade is a proven business model, it is not a charity. Fair Trade works by removing barriers to trade often found in places of hardship; Fair Trade facilitates connections with customers so that farmers, artisans, and communities can prosper.
Fair Trade also supports sustainability.  Products sold through Fair Trade businesses are grown or crafted using environmentally sustainable practices and natural resources; the long-term trading partnerships establish steady and reliable income; the human dignity of people is affirmed by supporting their right and ability to earn a living wage; success experienced through the Fair Trade system builds hope and confidence leading to creativity and learning while at the same time preserving and valuing cultural traditions. The unique products Fair Trade brings to world markets spread appreciation for the variety of goods, artistry and skill from many cultures.
For detailed information on Fair Trade see the webpages for organizations such as Fair Trade America, Fair Trade Certification, and Fair Trade Federation.
I can’t wait to see what treasures are in store for us at the Fair Trade Winds market at St. Luke after Masses December 2 and 3, 2023.
