Summer Reading
U.S. government websites may not be the first place you might turn for summer reading but give them a try! I just spent a lovely summer twilight on my deck discovering some inspiring articles.
From NOAA’s www.climate.gov to a climate quiz on the State Department webpage, to the Natural History Museum’s video on the Tipping Point, there is lots to explore.
On the U.S. Geological Survey site, I learned the essential role of glaciers in the worldwide water system and the stark consequence of glacial melt. Check it out at https://www.usgs.gov/faqs/how-would-sea-level-change-if-all-glaciers-melted
NOAA’s website, www.climate.gov gives a window into what is already happening at local levels. A wide variety of case studies demonstrate resilience strategies that people are building in their businesses and communities. One study reports on Blacksburg, Virginia’s work to identify the top climate hazards there and the impact on people and the community. Another explores involving community participation in mitigating coral reef bleaching in the Samoas.

Today’s final teaser is a video from The Natural History Museum on the Tipping Points that spell disaster BUT the focus is on positive, human activated tipping points that can help rebalance the planet. Go to https://www.amnh.org/explore/videos/earth-and-climate/earth-day-2023-tipping-points and view this motivating video that brings to mind Pope Francis’ exhortations in Laudato Si’ that change is possible, that young people demand change and that motivation and education are needed to accomplish change!
