Care for creation - INITIATIVES
Saint Luke Lighting Project (Update: 7/16/2021)
(Let There Be "greener" Light!)
Our energy efficient lighting project is near completion allowing us to benefit financially and environmentally. The new lights are up to 80% more efficient as ~95% of the energy is converted into light and only ~5% is wasted as heat... Less energy use reduces the demand for power plants and decreases greenhouse gas emissions. Thanks to the generosity of a number of our parishioners for raising a significant portion of the funds needed for the lighting project.

Saint Luke Lighting Project
(Let There Be "greener" Light!)
Our supportive pastor, Father Richard M. Guest made an announcement in Spring 2021 about his plans to redo the lighting through the parish facilities, converting over to LED a “greener” option that will eventually save us money in the school and rectory and further down the line in the church, as well. The price tag on the project is roughly $80,000 with a qualifying rebate of nearly $30,000 from Dominion Power.

Saint Luke Parishioners Celebrate Earth Day
Our parishioners took on a number of various projects and came together to show simple ways to protect our planet in honor of Earth Day on April 22, 2021. Each one of us can make a difference, but together, we can make a huge impact to live in a more sustainable manner as faithful stewards of creation.

Earth Day 2021In his 2015 Encyclical, Laudato Si’, Pope Francis said, “….The pace of consumption, waste and environmental change has so stretched the planet’s capacity that our contemporary lifestyle, unsustainable as it is, can only precipitate catastrophes, such as those which even now periodically occur in different areas of the world. The effects of the present imbalance can only be reduced by our decisive action, here and now…” (#161)
The Paris accord is working to keep carbon and methane emissions from raising earth temperatures by more than 1.5-2 degrees Celsius. That goal likely requires major emitting nations including China, the U.S., Europe, Japan, India, and others, to reduce emissions by 50% over the next decade. This is a challenging task. Humanity has been worthy of accomplishing many challenges in the past, however, overcoming famines, pandemics, and other hardships.
Earth Day symbolizes a time for all of us to come together and address issues of protecting our planet, our way of life, and equality for all.
Some Earth Day events include the Virtual Run Challenge, which sets out symbolic goals such as a group running goal to see how many times we can virtually circle the earth’s 24,901 mile equator: 2020 Earth Day Virtual Challenge | The Virtual Run Challenge; Plant a Seed in Celebration of Earth Day; the Alexandria River Cleanup; Folk for the Future (an outdoor benefit concert); Restore Our Earth and other events. To get involved in local planning, you can visit our Fairfax County government site that’s facilitating a local community wide energy and climate change program (CECAP): Public Engagement with CECAP | Office of Environmental and Energy Coordination (fairfaxcounty.gov). Decisive action can start now, with fun as well as challenging activities for all ages.
