Below are just a few of the service and outreach programs
Saint Luke Catholic Church actively participates in:
Prayer Shawl Ministry - Currently meeting monthly via Zoom
St. Luke’s Prayer Shawl Ministry will start up again in September! Our hope is that the shawls we knit and crochet will bring a sense of love and comfort to those who have suffered loss or serious illness. Our shawls are distributed through the Parish Nurse and Bereavement Programs at St. Luke’s.
Meeting times have changed this year: the Group meets on the SECOND MONDAY of the month from 9:45 am-11:30 am. The group meets in the Parish Library, lower level of the Rectory.
Please contact Anna Wallich if you have any questions.
Shop and Share When you visit the supermarket, buy some extra items and deposit them in one of the white boxes at the entrances to the church. They will be distributed to the needy.
Sandwich Program (Dinner Program for Battered Women) - Program is currently suspended.
Each week sandwiches made by Saint Luke parishioners are delivered to a shelter for battered women near Bailey's Crossroads. Parishioners may make sandwiches either of bologna, cheese and mustard or of peanut butter and jelly and place each sandwich in a plastic sandwich bag then put them all in the original bread loaf wrapper. They may be made on either white or wheat bread. Sandwiches need to be placed in the refrigerator in Flaherty Hall kitchen no later than 10:30 a.m. on Sunday. Someone from Saint Luke will deliver the sandwiches to the shelter near Bailey’s Crossroads by Noon. Drivers are needed to deliver sandwiches to the shelter, one Sunday per month. Email Judy Fennimore or by phone at 703 713 2052.
S.O.M.E. - Program is currently suspended.
So Others Might Eat is an interfaith project regularly supported by Saint Luke. Parishioners prepared food and bring it to the church on the third Saturday of odd-numbered months - January, March, May, July, September and November. Parishioners are requested to prepare any of the following three main courses for lunch - meatloaf, baked or fried chicken, or pasta with a generous portion of meat - and deliver it to the church parking lot in the morning. Please identify your donation with large bold letters – M for meatloaf, C for chicken and P for pasta. In addition to food donation support, the Saint Luke S.O.M.E. program needs volunteers to transport food to Washington and to help serve it. Contact Thomas Pereira or by phone at 703 821 2203.
Share, Inc. Share inc. is an ecumenical organization of local faith communities established in 1969 to help the less fortunate in Mclean, Pimmit Hills and nearby areas. It operates a number of ongoing programs including: crisis interventions for families encountering severe distress to ward off evictions, utility cutoffs, etc.; a furniture exchange to provide used furniture for the needy; a free food pantry and clothing room at a local church; and transportation services to assist seniors obtain medical services. We also run special events to provide new school supplies for needy families in the summer; food baskets at Thanksgiving, Christmas and Easter; and a “free store” of gifts at Christmas. For furniture donations please call 703-448-1054, this is a recorded line and one of our scheduling volunteers will return your call in a day or two. For more information see our web page at www.shareofmclean.org or click here or contact Vic Kimm, president or by phone at 703 356 8451.
Pro-Life Committee Members work within the parish and school communities to advance respect for all human life from conception until natural death, following the four-fold approach of prayer, education, action and sacrifice. The committee sponsors the Green Sale during Advent to raise money for A Woman’s Choice crisis pregnancy center and a Baby Shower to collect donations. The central event of the year is the March for Life in January, a demonstration for laws to protect the unborn and witness the sanctity of life. All parishioners are most welcome to join in this important work. Contact Bryce or Catherine Weaver or by phone at 703 556 3285.
